13 Bottles & Jars XXX, 2015

Reminiscent of Diebenkorn and the Califoria School of Abstract Expressionism, the Fat Canary Journal ends 2018 with a seductive harmony of color and space created by New York artist Peri Schwartz in her Studio and Bottles & Jars series.

Peri Schwartz grew up in Far Rockaway, NY. She received her BFA from Boston University’s School of Fine Arts and her MFA from Queens College. She lives and works in New Rochelle, NY. Her paintings, prints and drawings focus on composition and the interplay of color, light and space. Her work is in museum collections in the US and Europe.

My work is more about the construction of an image than of a polished, finished painting, drawing or print. Working directly from the subject is essential. For the past seventeen years, I have worked on studio paintings and still lifes of bottles and jars. As my work progresses I constantly arrange and re-arrange, adding and subtracting until the configuration is right. What I am trying to achieve is a balance between abstraction and representation.
